Shippin' Out April 5-11: Nintendo DSi

Camera-equipped portable launches busy week at retail including further Chronicles of Riddick, The Godfather II, Ninja Blade, and Rhythm Heaven.

The long-awaited North American launch of the Nintendo DSi is finally here. The camera-equipped iteration of Nintendo's popular portable system hit US shelves Sunday morning, trailing its Japanese launch by nearly half a year.

A new system launch ordinarily means a flood of new games at retail, but the DSi's exclusive debut lineup is available strictly through Nintendo's DSi Ware downloadable store. However, the new-fangled system will play the newly released DS game Rhythm Heaven just fine.

On the non-portable front, things are looking grim in tone, if not in quality. The M-for-Mature-rated EA game The Godfather II puts players in the thick of the cinematic storyline, while Starbreeze Studios' The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena takes the original Escape From Butcher Bay and amps it up for the current-generation systems with extra single-player content and new multiplayer action. Both games are set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

PC users can also look for Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, the second stand-alone expansion to Relic Entertainment's critically acclaimed real-time strategy game. As might be expected from an expansion, Tales of Valor includes more single-player campaign missions, as well as new units, multiplayer modes, and maps.

For gamers who like real time but prefer action to strategy, there's the Xbox 360-exclusive Ninja Blade. Developed by From Software, Ninja Blade puts players in the tabi of a modern-day shadow warrior on a quest to cleanse Tokyo of a legion of monstrosities.

The PSP is also getting a bit of Japanese flavor this week in the form of Dragon Ball: Evolution and Hammerin' Hero. The former is a fighting game tie-in for the upcoming feature film starring Chow Yun-Fat and is based on the popular animated series. The latter title, published by Atlus, is an old-school beat-'em-up starring a hero who uses his massive mallet to crush corporate greed.

Ruffian manhandling Crackdown 2?

What we heard: After it went on sale in February 2007, Crackdown became a hit for a variety of reasons. One big draw was that its Dundee, Scotland-based developer, Realtime Worlds, was founded by Grand Theft Auto co-creator David Jones. Another was the fact the title's GTA-esque open-world gameplay was slated to proceed Grand Theft Auto IV by eight months. Following a subsequent delay, Crackdown beat Rockstar's game by over a year. Finally, the initial shipments of the game came with a code that allowed players to access the beta test of Halo 3.

As a result of these factors, Crackdown went on to become a solid hit, selling over 1.5 million units worldwide. According to the NPD Group, some 750,000 of those were in the US. So why hasn't a sequel been announced? That was the question raised by Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in a podcast last week. Speaking with Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer, the Xbox Live director of programming pronounced, "I'm here to say on behalf of the community, we need another Crackdown." Spencer concurred wholeheartedly, saying the game was "one of his favorites" but offering no new information.

Since nature--and the Internet--abhor a vacuum, speculation has rushed in to fill the cracks opened up by Hryb and Spencer's comments. This week, the online edition of UK-based Edge magazine weaved several skeins together to form a compelling narrative about the possible development of a Crackdown sequel.

The rumor train starts with a Flickr photostream set titled "Office Viewing" spotted by ScottishGames.biz, a regional business site. Posted under the name "Ruffian Games," the stream streams' caption reads "Gaz, Billy, and Barry viewing units in the Vision building with a view to one of them being our permanent HQ."

Putting two and two together, Edge indentifies "Gaz" as Gaz Liddon, CEO of the Xen Group, a game-development consultancy group which provided "core technology for rendering and physics, artwork, design, and managerial resources" for the original Crackdown.

The "Billy" in question is tentatively ID'd by Edge as Crackdown lead designer Billy Thomson, rumored to be involved in a startup studio named Ruffian. Indeed, outside the office viewing set, the photostream features a Ruffian Games logo (pictured).

"Barry" is not identified, but the circumstantial evidence was enough for ScottishGames.biz to offer up a theory. After promising readers that "We never, ever deal in idle gossip," the site does exactly that, saying Ruffian's first project is "said to be the sequel to a best-selling sandbox game, also created in Dundee." US-based trade site GamaSutra quickly jumped on the bandwagon, saying it had confirmed with "unconfirmed sources" that Ruffian was indeed working working on a Crackdown follow-up.

The official story: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."--Microsoft rep.
Bogus or not bogus?: The combination of Edge, GamaSutra, and ScottishGames.biz makes for a compelling "not bogus" argument. However, by mid-afternoon, the plot had thickened. Britain-based Videogaming247.com got in touch with Realtime Worlds studio head Colin MacDonald, who said that his shop was engaged in "ongoing discussions" to work on a second Crackdown.

Though MacDonald conceded that no deal has yet been signed, he did express skepticism "that Microsoft would harm an otherwise fruitful existing development relationship by gambling on funding Crackdown 2 with a startup on RTW's doorstep, for obvious reasons." He went on to contend that if Microsoft did go with another developer, it would likely be an established one. Whether his words are insider information or PR spin to help move along a deal have yet to be seen.

GTA hauls in $710M, M-rated Wii games "viable"

Take-Two chairman raises possibility of GTA Wii, CFO says carjacking franchise made up 60 percent of fiscal year sales; stock sinks below $9.

Yesterday's Take-Two Interactive earnings report grabbed headlines for a variety of reasons. It was bundled with news that the New York City-based publisher had signed Rockstar Games cofounders Dan and Sam Houser to contracts that will keep them around through 2012. Also, the company's record annual profit came in spite of lower-than-expected August-October earnings, which sent its stock spiraling southward. As of press time, Take-Two shares had dipped below $9, more than $3 below its Wednesday closing value, and roughly $17 less than Electronic Arts' February buyout offer.

In a conference call with analysts, Take-Two executives revealed that the company's 2K Games label would no longer be publishing Champions Online. They also divulged some other nuggets of information about exactly how important the GTA series is to the company's bottom line. CFO Lainie Goldstein revealed that the felonious franchise accounted for 60 percent--or $710 million--of Take-Two's earnings for the fiscal year ended October 31.

In the aforementioned underperforming fourth quarter, GTA games generated 40 million, or 17 percent, of the publisher's sales. For its 2009 fiscal year, Take-Two expects 45 percent of income to come from Rockstar and 55 percent from its 2K label. Of that 55 percent, 25 percent is expected to come from 2K Sports (NHL 2K10, NBA 2K10), 20 percent from 2K Games (BioShock 2, the Civilization series), and 10 percent from the 2K Play casual brand.

Given GTA's sustained popularity and the Wii's increasing ubiquity, many analysts have wondered aloud if the series will ever come to the console. One such analyst put the question directly to Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick during yesterday's call. In response he offered an at times apparently contradictory message.

"We've got a bunch of sports titles that are going to take advantage of the Wii, [but] some of our best content really isn't appropriate for the Wii," explained Zelnick. "Frankly even for the M rated content that we think is much more appropriate for the PS3 or 360, we have to look at the Wii as a viable platform across all our labels. We have to because you can't ignore the install base. You just can't." Curiously, no mention was made of Manhunt 2, Rockstar's first M-rated game released on the Wii.

Zelnick went on to explain that Take-Two views the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars--due out March 17--as a test case. "We're going to do a lot of learning with GTA Chinatown Wars on the DS in terms of bringing that kind of content to a Nintendo platform. Our partnership with Nintendo is as strong as it's ever been. We're excited about it. We talk to them all the time. They provide great feedback for us. We're highly focused on it."

Metal Gear Solid touches iPhone, iPod

Konami confirms Kojima's stealth actioner will join Frogger, Silent Hill, Dance Dance Revolution on Apple's handhelds in 2009.

Last week, a teaser page on Konami's Web site led many to speculate that the Japanese publisher was working on bringing the Metal Gear Solid franchise to the Xbox 360, reviving the Metal Gear Acid brand, or even porting the long-running series to the Wii. However, those predictions have turned out to be off base.

Konami revealed today that Metal Gear Solid Touch will be heading to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch early in the New Year. According to Konami, the game will drop series protagonist Solid Snake in an all-new adventure that features many of the characters and locales introduced in Konami's recent PlayStation 3 blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Konami also noted that the game will be action-oriented and will include eight initial "stages," with additional levels promised at a later date

Metal Gear Solid Touch won't be Solid Snake's first outing on mobile platforms. The stealth action hero was also the subject of Konami's Metal Gear Solid Mobile, a portable action adventure developed by Ideaworks3D that was named winner of the 2007 International Mobile Game Awards.

In addition to the celebrated stealth action series, Konami also confirmed Frogger for the iPhone, calling it "a pixel-perfect conversion of the classic arcade game"; Silent Hill: The Escape; and DanceDanceRevolution S Lite.

Konami plans to augment these Apple offerings in the future, with the publisher's VP of online and mobile Anthony Borquez commenting, "We welcome the iPhone and iPod Touch to our product lineup and look forward to these initial games."

The teaser page on Konami's Web site now links to what appears to be a placeholder page with the Metal Gear Solid Touch logo.

NPD: Lich King dominates November PC charts

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Boxshot

Second expansion to Blizzard's 11-million-strong MMOG tops US desktop sales, followed by Call of Duty, Spore, Fallout 3.

The big story to come out of the NPD Group's November recap of game industry retail sales in the US was record-setting sales of Nintendo's Wii and DS, which sold a combined 3.6 million units last month. However, yesterday also revealed heightened demand for console and handheld software. Thanks to a strong debut from Microsoft's Gears of War 2 and Activision's Call of Duty: World at War, sales in the category were up a combined 11 percent year over year.

As the NPD Group segments off its desktop software sales from its console and handheld report, that figure doesn't even factor in one of the biggest releases of the year, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. This week, NPD also revealed sales rankings for PC games in November, and unsurprisingly, Lich King and its collector's edition companion secured the first and second slot.

As noted by NPD analyst Anita Frazier yesterday, Wrath of the Lich King sold in excess of 1.4 million units during its debut month. That tally represents just one half of the game's first-day worldwide sales, which Activision Blizzard pegged at 2.8 million shortly after the WOW expansion's debut. At the end of October, Blizzard Entertainment announced that its massively popular massively multiplayer online game had breached the 11-million-subscriber mark.

World of Warcraft subscribers hail from a number of countries and regions, including North America, Europe, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Most recently, WOW was launched in Russia and Latin America.

Of course, there aren't enough SKUs of World of Warcraft to dominate the entire top 10, though the WOW: Battle Chest--which contains both the original game and its first expansion, Burning Crusade--also occupied the sixth slot. Augmenting the strong performance by its console brethren, Call of Duty: World at War also performed well on the PC, securing the third slot in the charts.

Despite being the most-pirated game of 2008, Will Wright and EA Maxis' sim-everything Spore still managed to shift a substantial number of legal units, chalking up a fourth-place finish in November. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe and The Sims 2 Apartment Life Expansion Pack charted a respective seventh and ninth.

Though its Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts fell out of the console charts in November, Fallout 3 for the PC remained a top-10 performer. Shortly after its debut in October, publisher Bethesda Softworks claimed that the game had shipped a combined 4.7 million units during its first week at retail.

The PC is often considered the true home for games produced by Valve, and the Turtle Rock Studios-developed Left 4 Dead enjoyed a measure of success on the platform in the US last month. EALA's Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 rounded out November's top-10 chart.

Guitar Hero World Tour sells 978K in Nov.

UBS reports Activision beat Rock Band 2-to-1 in November rhythm-game revenues--but 30.8% year-on-year earnings slide despite product doubling rings alarm bells.

This week brought some good news for Activision: Guitar Hero World Tour was November's top music game. Though NPD hasn't released any specific sales figures other than the Wii version's 475,000-unit tally, UBS analyst Ben Schachter provided a run-down of the Guitar Hero franchise's sales for the month. He also tabulated the combined sales of Electronic Arts, MTV Games, and Harmonix's rival series, Rock Band According to Schachter, just over 1.7 million Guitar Hero games were sold in the US during November 2008, a 25.3 percent decrease from the nearly 2.3 million the year prior. All Rock Band games, by contrast, sold fewer units by comparison--just 628,452--but saw a massive 64.7 percent increase in sales from the year before.

However, when only revenue is considered, the disparity between the two franchises narrows. Guitar Hero games generated $145.9 million in the US last month, down 19.5 percent from November 2007's $181.1 million. However, thanks to an installed base of instruments, Rock Band games didn't see that much of an uptick, rising just 9.7 percent to $68.7 million during the month.

While impressive, Rock Band and Guitar Hero's combined $214.6 million haul was actually a 12 percent slide from November 2007. More disturbing for Activision is the steep decline in both revenues and units for the Guitar Hero franchise. In November 2007 Guitar Hero III's six SKUs--or individual retail product configurations--generated 1.9 million units in sales, amounting to combined $158.8 million. In October 2008, Guitar Hero World Tour sold just 978,000 units, minting just $109.8 million.

Though Schachter blames the lower number in part on constrained supply, he echoed a colleague's concerns that this downward trend is a sign that the rhythm game market may be saturated. "This will fuel concerns that the genre is past its peak," he said in a note to investors. "With Activision and others sure to bring new innovation to the genre next year we can't count it out, but it almost certainly won't be the growth driver it has been over the past two years."
